About
Feeding your kids healthy food can be a challenge, but so rewarding! My name is Amy, and I am a mother of three kids, a graduate of Health Education, and I love food. This blog is about putting into practice everything I learned in college and throughout my years working in the community health field to find healthy foods my kids will also enjoy.
What keeps you busy: I work part time for the Department of Health, counseling with state employees about improving their health. I head up the healthy lifestyle program at my kids elementary school. I’m active in our church children’s group and I’m also president and developer of the Super Healthy Kids, Healthy Habits Plate. Recently I received an award from Hilary Weeks titled, “Because I have Today.” My plans are to start a Masters of Nutrition program at the University of Utah. I’m currently taking the pre-requisites to get accepted.
Are your kids picky eaters? They used to be! When I started this blog in Sept. 2007, they were extremely picky. I was careful to only prepare meals I knew they would eat and wouldn’t cause any significant fighting at the dinner table. However, blogging about new and healthy food has changed their palates. In being persistent for almost 2 years, they will try almost everything I make.
What is your food philosophy? Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds comprise the biggest chunk of our diet. We TRY to consume HALF of our diet in fruits and vegetables. Processed food is very limited. We almost never eat out (only on family vacations when we have to). When we are at family or school parties however, we love to bring an indulgent dessert.
What does your family like to do for fun? We love hiking, biking, running local races, swimming, and roller blading.

Visit the blog daily for new ideas on getting your kids to eat fruits and vegetables, more whole grains, more protein, or just getting active as a family.
The kids in this blog are Nathan, 11 years old. I sometimes call him Cereal Boy cause he eats lot’s of cereal. Then Erica, She’s 9 years old. I call her the flip-flopper sometimes because some days she will like one food, the next day she won’t like the same food and vice versa. Then there is TJ. He is 7. I call him ketchup boy because he will only try new foods if I add ketchup to it. He’s asked for ketchup on his pancakes and last night he asked for ketchup on his cheese tortelini.
Wade is my husband. He’s a nurse. Wade likes a good steak and fresh vegetables. He doesn’t care for dessert, but he’ll eat it if there is nothing else around.

These are fabulous ideas! I truly love it. Especially more points for trying new food. Last summer my son (who is 9 now) started a book club with 3 of his friends. It was a blast. We rotated who hosted and provided activities that corresponded with the book. At our house we did “nate the great” and I made a treasure hunt for the kids. They loved it.

Amy,
Thank you for the great site. Your site caught my attention while doing a google search. I had a lot of fun reading all the comments. Please forgive my ignorance with blogging. I hope that it is ok that I am writing to you. My husband has warned me to be very careful about spamming. I am writing to you because I think I can offer a healthy eating tip. However, I am not going to leave my website due to I am afraid of being that dreadful spammer. So… please write me back if you think your readers will be interested.
I am a mom of two young children. Offering them healthy food options has also been very important to me. I feel that convenient healthy food options are extremely lacking at our grocery stores. I partnered up with a mommy friend and we are now manufacturing and competing with huge food companies. We are VERY proud of our nutrition labels. It was very important to us that parents can recognize every ingredient that we use. no added sugars, preservatives, salt, hormones…..
I whole heartedly believe that Pitter Patties will help parents by offering a healthy, convenient, alternative to the standard chicken nuggets and mac-n-cheese.
If you are interested, I would love to share our nutritional label with you.
Mid September we will be available in Whole Foods Northern and Southern Ca, along with many other natural food stores. We are also getting very close to being available in stores located in Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Florida, & the Midwest.
Thank you for your time,
Kerry

Kerry; thank you for making healthier choices for our kids!
Fariella;
Thank you for reading my blog.
I have noticed in the health field, for every study that shows a particular food is bad, there is another study showing why that food is good. So I choose to follow my heart. My heart tells me, there is “good”, “better”, and “best”. I think dairy is a great way to get calcium into our diet, and I LOVE many dairy foods. However, whole milk, milk with hormones, cheeses, and high fat cream, is not part of a healthy diet. A “Better” choice for my family is low fat milks, hormone free milk, and yogurt. The “best” choice is to get calcium from green vegetables. We love food too much to cut out this food group! Thanks for asking.

Very groovy blog. Inspiring, too. Thank you for putting so much time and effort into it. BTW… love the idea of sneaking the spinach in the blueberry smoothie. Just awesome.

Great site, Amy! I came across it while searching out my book Poems on Fruits & Odes to Veggies – Where Healthy Eating Starts With a Poem. I think you will enjoy the fun and lyrical poems and vibrant water color pictures. This book is a great tool to introduce kids of all ages to their fruits and veggies. Check it out at http://www.judithnatellimclaughlin.com and keep blogging! Great stuff here.

I am SO happy to have found your blog! I found it through another blog, Susie’s Fit in the 40’s (we comment on how similar our blog names are). I’m in the beginning of my own fitness journey. My main goal right now is learning about nutrition and replacing poor eating habits with healthier ones for the whole family. I have 3 little kids and am always looking for tried-and-true recipes kids like. You are going on the front of my blog page. Thank you for doing this.

I love your website dedicated to healthy foods. In our house, a family with four rowdy boys- uh FIVE if you count my husband, I try to introduce new foods or vegetables in a fun way.
First- whenever I feel we need a jump-kick back into a healthy lifestyle (like after a vacation or holiday) we make fitness teams. Part of our fitness teams is drinking more water, eating our vegetables, we get points for excersising, etc… but at dinner I’ll have a “food challenge”. I try to offer a new food and our teams get points for trying.
We’ve tried V-8 juice to cauliflower and eggplant.
I love your ideas and thinkthis is a great resource for other moms!
thanks!
