Pinkalicious Porridge

When I called this oatmeal, Porridge today, the kids got a kick out of it. In TJ’s best English accent he said, “Please sir, I want some more porridge.” (Oliver Twist).

But in fact porridge is exactly what it is! According to Wikipedia, porridge is oats cooked in water or other liquid.  Just curious if anyone still calls it that? Anyone? Anyone?

So, we turned ours pink for a holiday Valentines post.  The great thing about the color pink, is no artificial colors necessary!  In fact, the entire pot was turned pink by raspberries alone.

What a perfect start to a great holiday!  Hopefully the fiber in this meal will offset the sugar rush they’ll certainly encounter later in the day!

  3. That’s funny, I remember calling it porridge as a kid – and I’m not that old! Or English. Or any other reason I can think of for calling it that. I think it’s just always what my gramma called it, and then my mom. It brings back yummy memories calling it that though, haha. Love the raspberries in yours :D

  4. Kriste says:

The pink is cute! But why have I never thought to put flax in with our oatmeal? Great idea!

  5. Karen says:

I’m in Australia and we all call it porridge over here :)

  6. Jodi Hayward says:

Yep, in Australia, we call it porridge, not oatmeal :)

  7. Jodi Hayward says:

Though we generally don’t cook it with sugar, usually with water&milk…then add a sprinkling of sugar/honey, and/or fruit, yoghurt, etc :)

  8. Jodi Hayward says:

Shouldn’t actually be a sugar rush because rolled oats are low GI and will give you a sustained level of lower blood sugar level?

  9. Amy says:

I meant the sugar rush from the Valentines Candy! lol

  10. Jennie says:

We actually ate this for breakfast this morning, except it was purple(from some blueberries and a few strawberries). I usually use frozen fruit, and cook it in a tad bit of water, just until it starts to break down, then add the remaining water and oats.

This is delicious, and one of our favorite ways to eat oatmeal(although we do not usually call it porridge!)

  11. Korin says:

I didn’t have any flax seed so I did without. I used frozen organic raspberries and sprinkled it with a little sugar in the raw. It was tasty!
