  • Rumor has it

Rumor has it that some of you (you know who you are) don’t like reading my blog because it makes you feel guilty for not doing more to keep your kids healthy!  First, let me be totally honest and set the record straight about a few things.

    • My 8 year old daughter (Erica) says EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, “Why do you have to make gross things for dinner every night”.

    IMG00069

    • My 6 year old son (TJ) subsists on granola bars, string cheese, apples, and ketchup (he even dips his apples in ketchup).

    • My 11 year old son (Nate) tells people his favorite food is candy. And just yesterday he said his 5th grade teacher is The Best because she is always giving them candy!

So, with that said, to ease the guilt, lets change our intentions to SMALL CHANGES! That’s right! Small changes can make huge differences.  You don’t have to use every idea on this blog.  Of course not.  But one in 50 may speak to you and inspire you to try it with your kids.  So, here are some small changes.

    • Make your kids smoothies once a week.  On that day they will be getting more fruits and vegetables than 98% of the rest of the kids in America!

    IMG_2663

    • Go outside this weekend instead of going to a movie.  Plan a family walk, hike, swim, bike ride, anything!!

    biking

    • Substitute!  When baking use applesauce instead of oil.  Light sour cream instead of full fat.  Light cream cheese, instead of regular.  Whole wheat flour instead of white.
    • Sneak it in!  Follow the Sneaky Chef, or Jessica Seinfeld and puree some veggies to include with your creamy, cheesy casseroles.  Or, sneak in the beans.
    • Replace the white bread in your house with whole wheat bread.
    • Teach them something about nutrition.  Angee is doing a nutrition segment this week on preschool nutrition ideas.

So, for the love of all that is healthy and good, Please keep visiting my blog. Don’t get scared away!

Post note edit: I forgot to add: Throw out the Little Debbies.  No one needs them. And while you are at it, Toss the Lorna Doones Beth. Obama said so.

So love this!!! Thank you for “keeping it real” and giving the rest of us some place to start. These are do-able for my family and our lifestyle. I really liked this post!!

(And thanx for the linky love–again. I was very surprised this morning when I saw some incoming links from your blog! You’re the best!)

The new blog looks adorable!! I love it!!! Maggie and TJ should get together. She dips her carrots in ketchup. Maggie loves my smoothies, so I guess I’m not as bad as I though I was. ;-)

I changed the way I eat in July, and in turn changed the way everyone in the house eats. I can’t be the only one eating healthy while everyone else eats the “bad-stuff”. So this goes for my kids… I try to get all the good stuff in them. Luckily, my 8 year old is ok with this, although veggies are still not her favs… but she gets tons of fruit in a day and actually likes whole wheat bread and mini-bagels (and she pretty much subsists on peanut butter and apple butter)! My youngest is 17 mo so we’re just starting her early and this is all she’ll know. But we also have a rule in our house that what we have for dinner is what we have… either eat it or not, but that’s it. But I cook healthy dinners with lots of variety. And I cook… not too much going out or ordering in, which I think so many people are accustomed to these days. Anyone and everyone can do this, but it takes time and effort, and in the long run is so worth it!

I was going to comment anyway because all your posted pictures are so cute!
Here’s the thing: does anybody under 50 even know what Lorna Doones are? I don’t think I’ve ever had one.
But I’ll stay away, for sure. I’m already worried about Obama coming and taking my cars right out of my garage.

I love reading your blog. You inspire me to try just a little bit harder each day. My two year old and four year old don’t like everything I make, but for the most part they are pretty good about at least trying most new things. My four year old told me the other night, “Red peppers are my new favorite vegetable, mom.” I beleive if you start eating healthy at a young age then you train your taste buds to like and even prefer the healthier choices. We definately aren’t perfect in our choices all of the time, but your blog inspires me to try just a little bit harder! Thank you!!!

Love it…small changes eventually add up to major lifestyle changes…and just think of what your kids are learning!

Your new site looks awesome!!! I really love the colors =) And you don’t scare me – you inspire me! Honestly, I keep reading more and more about preservatives in food (even some canned organic food!) and it’s not good. I never really learned to cook, but most of the things I’ve found on your site I’ve been able to handle! Thanks for sharing your recipes!

I will admit, I am one who can feel guilty reading blogs. I get overwhelmed with how much I should be doing, but am not.

BUT for some reason I have never felt guilty reading this blog. You add a really nice reality to your ideas. Now maybe it’s because once upon a time I knew you.

I have found, and implimented, some great ideas from your blog. I tend to choose those that seem do-able to me. But it’s nice to have my daily reminder that eating healthy can be easy.

Thanks, Amy! I’ll try to keep my guilt to a minimum today. I think I can handle smoothies once a week!

I’m a loyal follower, don’t worry. I read and absorb so much about food and I like the way you make it so simple. I read something today.. you can reclaim a lot of things, but when you lose your health it’s hard to get it back. Thanks for all of your good ideas and fun approach!

My 9 year old says “Why do you always make things I hate?”
Speaking of sneaking in the beans. I make brownies with a can of black beans. Rinse the beans, put them back in the can, fill to the top with water, then put them in the blender. Stir it into a dry brownie mix and bake like normal. (no oil or eggs).
He requests these brownies. I’ll tell him someday that they’re made of beans.
If you think this sounds gross, you should try it first. They’re tasty! and I don’t really like black beans.

Sorry, didn’t read your bean story until after I commented. Feel free to delete!

Drama Mama: Homemade (even with added fat and sugar) in my book will always be healthier than fake food made with chemicals and preservatives. I’m glad you found some things you can use.
Jackie: You don’t feel guilty because you’ve probably seen me (and my kids) indulging on desserts one too many times!
Teri: I’m sure you are doing a great job! Have you got your mustard yet?
Kendra: Thanks Kendra. Just a joke on people thinking the government is going to take away all our choices. Thanks for reading.
Thanks Shannon! Its true. Once our health is gone, its hard to reclaim it!
Vanessa: Its a great comment. I haven’t tried black beans in brownies as the entire substitute. Thanks
Kelly: I’m hoping they learn something.
Other Kelly: Thanks Kelly. I love hearing things like this. Doesn’t it make you so proud when they say they have a vegetable they love!
Beth: Beth, you crack me up! Guess I need to lock my garage. I’m bringing you some Lorna Doones. Have you never donated Blood before? The red cross always brings those.
Great Story Texas mom! Nothing makes me crazier than when I am counseling with someone and they talk about how they are on a diet…but they have to keep Pop tarts in the house for the kids! I’m like NO, NO! Even though your kids LOOK fine, everyone needs to eat better.
Megan: I love Maggie! What a train wreck if two kids like that ever married! My final comment is, if your kids are growing, I’m sure you are doing just fine. And Maggie sure is growing.
Angee: Hope lots of people will check out your site.
