Yogurt

p5120082-winceWednesday:  Nuts, seeds, legumes, and other proteins

My kids love yogurt.  Unfortunately, they keep adding unnecessary ingredients to yogurt, its getting pricey for me, and I’m becoming more and more concerned about the milk being used to make yogurt.  Between added hormones, fake sugars, too much sugars, preservatives, etc. I thought it was time we started making our own.   When I found this “Make yogurt in your crockpot post” I was super excited to try it.

I used to cook yogurt myself until I broke all the little yogurt jars that accompanied my yogurt maker.  But I always have a crockpot.  So yesterday I attempted the task. It turned out OK.  A little runny (which the blog author warned would happen if you didn’t use whole milk, which of course I didn’t).  But nonetheless, I’m willing to try it again.  It tasted great with some sliced up strawberries and granola on top.  All by itself, it may as well be drunken…drinken….drank (not sure here)

BETTER WHEY

While I’m here on yogurt, we got in the mail a high protein yogurt to try called Better Whey.  It has familiar ingredients (just non-hormone milks, cane sugar (rather than HFCS), and actual fruit etc.) There is an extra dose of whey protein to get 15 grams of protein in a 6 oz container.  And overall, there is 30% less sugar than what is in most yogurts.   My kids thought it was great and ate it up as if it was the regular yogurt they are always eating.  You can find it at Whole Foods or go here.
