Outdoor Camp and Meal Plan

I just spent two days with my 5th grader up at an outdoor camp owned by our school district. We had so much fun, despite the fact that Erica told me she was there to hang out with her friends, and NOT me!  The best part was the hikes in the snow we took. One of the teachers was able to get really good quality snow shoes for the kids to try snow shoeing. Most of them, it was their first time.  We went for a night hike and gazed at the amazing sky. There weren’t any clouds and it was clear as I’ve ever seen the sky. Then we went for a day hike and found a fun play area for the kids.  I also saw Swiss Family Robinson for the first time! LOVED IT!!  I’m almost 40, so it’s sort of shocking I had never seen it.

Since this is a healthy kids blog, I did want to share one of the menu’s I took a picture of.  And by sharing this, I am in no way bagging on our school district.  I really love our public schools, the teachers were fabulous, and trash talking them doesn’t facilitate change.  But… I just can’t help sharing:

Nice entrée, huh? That was Wednesday night’s meal. I was there Thursday night, so my entrée was rice. lol.  Good thing they only go there once during Elementary school.

I’m usually discouraged by the school menus in our area. My daughter is a couple years away from school still, but I’m not looking forward to their ideas of lunch and breakfast. Thank goodness there’s always the option of packing!

I used to work as a teacher for that camp for 3 summers. After the first week I was there, I started bringing my own food. :)

  3. Once a month they serve my son tortilla chips and “cheese” as his main entree for lunch. And by “cheese”, I mean the waxy, gross stuff that you buy in the chip aisle of the grocery store. So disturbing.
