  • Smoothie mix-ins for kids and giveaway

As you know, my blender has been literally MELTING!  A few days ago, drinking a delicious smoothie, I felt a hard piece of PLASTIC in my mouth. It had melted off the blender and mixed its way into my smoothie! That was the last smoothie I made on that blender.  So while the fight is still going with my husband about me buying a Blendtec, and I couldn’t use my blender, I bought a $50 Oster blender from Costco… and I LOVE IT.  And my husband LOVES that I love it.  I learned from that, start high of something you want, and he’ll be ecstatic when you make a purchase for less.   Next I’ll try some $400 shoes and maybe he’ll be glad when I end up with $50 shoes!!

Now that my kids are drinking more smoothie’s, I had been contemplating stepping it up a notch and adding some Super Food mix-ins.  Like wheat grass and powdered vegetables.  I was hesitant though, because it isn’t cheap, and I didn’t want them to pour it down the drain.

Then I found Amazing Grass who had a Kidz line.  They agreed to let my kids try some of their products, and I couldn’t be happier!  We’ve tried their chocolate powder and their berry powder.  It has

    • greens like Kale, peas, wheat grass, barley grass, asparagus, alfalfa, broccoli, sprouts, lima beans, green peas, kiwi, spinach, brussel sprouts, and zucchini.
    • Oranges like apricots, carrots, mangoes, sweet potatoes, pineapple, tangerines, yellow squash.
    • Reds like pomegranates, Raspberries, guavas, cranberries, red cabbage, cherries, and tomatoes.
    • And Blues/ purples like beets, plums, grapes, and more!!

    GYMNASTICS ENERGY

    GYMNASTICS ENERGY

The berry powders I’ve added straight to the smoothie, and the chocolate powder I added to some warm milk.  My kids drank it as fast as they did drinks without add-ins.  AND ASKED FOR MORE!!  Flip-flopper has been asking for a smoothie every morning since I’ve been adding the powder.

That product sounds like a great idea. I’m curious whether it affects the texture of the smoothie-is it “grainier”? I think the berry one would go over quite well at our house, but not if it made the smoothie chalky. Thanks for the tip!

Sara K: It actually was grainier, but didn’t seem chalky at all to me. My kids didn’t seem to mind. Maybe would depend if we used milk or juice in our smoothie? We’ve been using soy milk.

We want a Blendtec too (I think my husband just wants one to experiment blending household items though :) . But I am also fine with my cheaper blender and I already have a wheat grinder, so well see. We are huge smoothie fans so it would be nice to try some healthy add-ins!

I read on consumer reports that the oster blender (beehive I think) ranked just under the vita mix blender, and it’s a lot cheaper!!! I would love a 400 dollar blender, but I am having a hard time justifying it. :P I am currently without a blender (mine broke), but may go pick up the oster blender in the meantime, especially if I win, because I will be ready to make some smoothies! ;) Thanks!

I also read some good reviews on Amazon. I have to say, I can’t believe how smooth my smoothies are. My 10 year old kitchen aid was giving me so many chunks and lumps. But this Oster has exceeded my smoothness expectations! I’m actually glad I didn’t pay $400 yet. Maybe in a few years when I’m rich, right?

We drink a chocolate protein shake that has acidophilus and other good stuff in it. Made with honey crystals. All 3 boys love the shakes. I am not having much luck with the Juice Plus vitamins though (my 7 year old doesn’t like them much and the other two are too young). I would love to try these into fruit smoothies and see what they think!

I finally get a chance to leave a comment! Amy, I have been following your blog for quite some time & you have helped me so much! Thank you! I work the evening shift (4pm to 12am) and it is on my dinner break that I read your blog (and I’m unable to leave any comments from that computer). I have made so many of the foods you have suggested and love them all. I have been pricing these veggie powders and haven’t been able to take the ‘plunge’ due to the cost. Trying to get 5 a day into my 2yo & 4yo (and myself!) is a challenge — I really think the powders will help us a great deal! Amy, thank you so, so, so much for everything!!!

Hey Amy – Josh and I have thought about making smoothies here at home but haven’t dared try it yet. (We love Roxberry the most of the stores though.) Do you have any suggestions for making them cheaper? Or good recipes? :)

    Comment from Amy
    Time July 9, 2009 at 4:39 am

Kim. This is our basic recipe: a liquid (soy milk or OJ), frozen fruit (usually strawberries and blueberries from a big Costco bag-seems to be the cheapest), baby spinach leaves, and a squirt of flax seed oil.

But I definitely need to get more creative with our smoothies. If I come up with more ideas, I’ll let you know.
