And some that fail
I hesitate to blog about the failures, but I today I will because:
- Although my kids turned up their nose to me, your kids are probably not as stubborn.
- It takes MANY times offering a food before a child tries it. The younger you start them, the more successful it will be.
- My failures can be time consuming! I would have so much more to blog about if I included them once in a while.
So, last night after a long, long day, I set out to make dinner. Chicken (that got burned to a crisp), rice they wouldn’t eat, and peas (that I tried to make a white sauce for and the sauce was too runny it didn’t stick to the pea).
They wouldn’t eat the rice because I got crazy and made 100% sweet brown rice. Prior attempts have been mixed with white rice. I cooked it in a rice cooker with chicken broth, and added parmesan to the top. I thought it tasted pretty good. Here is what they thought:
Flip flopper, “Uh…. Nu-oh. There is something wrong with this.” She’s starting to talk like a teenager.
Cereal boy, “Why is there an aftertaste?”
Ketchup boy, “You try to guess what I think of it?” Me, “You like it!”. Ketchup boy, “Wrong! I don’t”

Thanks for the #2 statement. I am trying to get my daughter (she’s 2 1/2) to eat healthy dinners. She will only eat a few things (mac n cheese, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, etc.) After visiting with her doctor last week, we are NOT making a “kid” dinner for her any more. She gets what we eat, which is healthy. We have done this for 4 nights so far, and she has yet to eat more than one bite. But we have hope. The reminder that it takes kids many times to try new foods is a great one.

I stumbled on your blog and loved this post. I just found some really good sneaky things to put into my kiddos food. I throw spinach into their brownies and then process white beans and use them as a subsitute for shortening in cookies. Kids can’t tell!

Thanks Lori! I had no idea about white beans. I’m trying this one for sure!

I too have had disasters such as this – normally when I have tried to do much in one day and mess up the recipe when cooking! Probably best for me to leave experimenting in the kitchen for days when I have more time.

ketchup boy is hilarious! I’m just happy to know I’m not the only one who suffers dinner failures on occassion. I’m glad your trip was so much fun!
