Treasure Hunters

gps.gifI never knew a GPS would change my life.  When my husband wanted to buy one this summer, I almost didn’t think he should (we all get an allowance however, so technically, I couldn’t stop him).  And to my utter surprise, I am in love with his GPS for two reasons:

  • It has changed my running world.  I was totally lying to myself every time I would come back from running.  If I ran for thirty minutes, I’d get back and say, “Oh, I probably ran three miles.  I feel great, I ran fast, etc.  Now, running with the GPS, it is a complete reality check.  What I assumed was 3 miles, was really ALMOST 2!  But now I actually run 3 when I need to run 3.  My My husbands GPS will give you pace, moving time, and actually miles on it’s own little odometer.
  • It has given my kids and I a fun activity.  Geocaching is finding a treasure sometimes hidden in your own neighborhood.  We go to the geocaching website.  We enter the address of where we are, and find all the caches that are close by.  Then we write the coordinates (latitude and longitude) and set out to find it.  There is a treasure hidden when you arrive at the coordinates.  Fun stuff is usually placed inside like bouncy balls, cars, bubbles, jewlery, etc.  You take some and you leave some, and add your name to the log.  On vacation we walked 1 1/2 miles to find one.  Usually you can find them super close to your own house, but this was a state park trail.  My two older ones would walk 10 miles to find one, whereas ketchup boy told us Monday night on our hunt that he hates geocaching and couldn’t we just drive him to the next cache instead of walk.  You win some, you lose some.

Poor ketchup boy, he’s just got short legs. So if we go out geocaching with you and Wade, are you going to make us walk, too? Just curious…

We’re getting the bug too. You can find the GPS units cheap. For Geocaching, you’ll need one that can read Topo maps. The in car navigation type don’t really apply. One other thing you should point out is that these caches are all over suburbia. You don’t need to be in the desert or forest to find them. Good Luck.

Autumn, come borrow our GPS anytime. Corey, I’m glad you mentioned that. The cache’s are all over, not just trails. And I didn’t know that about the car GPS

Cool, Amy. We started geocaching a little over a year ago and we have so much fun. I started making a scrapbook album just for our geocaching:
