Pack a snack
My kids will not go anywhere without food. I guess that’s my fault. I always take food with me, in case we are gone a long time, but they will take food if we are driving a mile to the church.
So last Saturday when grandma and grandpa lovingly agreed to take the kids to a carnival, I was too busy getting ready for a obligation, I did not oversee their preparations. Apparently they each packed a lunch for the day (without prompts from me). My mom told me they had brought cut up apples, granola bars, water bottles, fruit leather, and carrots. It’s good to know that I stock my cupboards with things I’d be glad they are taking. Quickly, my soap box about fruit snacks. It’s candy! Don’t even call them fruit snacks. If you must buy them, save them for dessert!
Other good road snacks:
- String cheese
- Baked Pita chips
- Dried apricots
- Dried bananas
- Rice Cakes (the flavored mini ones are tasty, not filling though)
- Pretzels
- Homemade mini muffins
What does your family bring when you go out? Or am I the only one who can’t be gone for an hour without food?

Of course, cheerios is the perfect snack! We love cheerios. And BTW, I am going to make your healthy oatmeal cookies. They look delicious!

We make a special “road mix” which is our version of trail mix but for the car. Usually I put in dried fruit, small nuts (for our 4 year old), cheerios, and popcorn (also just for the 4 year old).
We also do Pirate’s Booty, Annie’s Whole Wheat Bunny Crackers, whole apples, cubed cheese and ham.
My favorite is our family’s Super Bar recipe, which changes each time we make it, but super easy and really portable and a good high energy snack:

Thanks sweet pea chef. I do want to make those granola bars. I’d do it tonight, but I haven’t bought molasses in a while. So I’m adding that to my shopping list. Thanks for the link.

Dang Amy! I really hate it when you inform me that my idea of a somewhat healthy snack is CANDY!? That must be why they taste so darn good! Well..at least I won’t have to make dessert for a while since we have a Costco sized box of them in the cupboard!

What I like about not having fruit snacks, is when my kids go to My husbands parents house who DOES have fruit snack’s, they act like grandma just offered them chocolate. They are so delighted to have such a treat. It’s their favorite reason to visit.

For two Christmases in a row all my toddler wanted from Santa was Fruit Snacks. After the second year, and second gigantic box (Santa loves Costco) we can’t even finish them almost two years later.
This year I think she’ll ask for pistachios, her new favorite treat thanks to this blog. I never would have thought to give my kids nuts, but they are a great grab and go snack (and less messy than peanut butter).

It’s just too bad fruits snacks cost so much less than pistachio’s.

I have an 18 month old so our snacks are a little different.
I make sure we have some cheerios, fruit bars, and usually water for short trips out. I always have a bottle of water for myself and a granola bar tucked in my purse in case we get stuck out for longer than anticipated.
Great suggestions on other snacks! Those sound great. And you must be proud of what your little ones packed in their lunches!
